Community Gardens

Our two community gardens consist of eighty-four leased plots, along with numerous plots designated for common purposes, projects or special groups. Using principles of organic gardening, Alex and Crescent Park Community Gardens encourage sustainable practices that enhance the local ecosystem (including supporting pollinators).

More than simply a place to grow food for the household, Alex House community gardens are truly communities of gardeners, with opportunities to learn, and socialize together. Gardeners take pride in maintaining and improving their common resources for themselves and for future generations of gardeners, as well as the neighbourhoods they enhance.

Alex House operates two community gardens:

  • Alex  Community Garden (ACG), 30 member plots located in Crescent Beach, across Sullivan St. from the rear of Alex House.

  • Crescent Park Community Garden (CPCG), 54 member plots located at 25th Ave and 128th St, next to the parking lot by Crescent Park Elementary School and the City of Surrey tennis courts.

Apply for a Garden Plot

The application period is February 15 to March 15, at which time you can apply directly. Otherwise, if you would like to be added to the waiting list, email communityprograms@alexhouse.net. As both gardens are separate entities, you may only be wait-listed and apply for one of them. Please indicate your preference.

Before applying, please note the following:

  • Plots vacated on or before August 1 are offered to wait-listed applicants in order of when their names were added.

  • Wait-listed applicants will be contacted when the application period for the following season opens in February and invited to apply.

  • At the close of the application period, submitted and complete applications from those on the waitlist (including the non-refundable deposit) are prioritized for admission in order of the date they were added to the waitlist.

  • Plots are then selected by all new applicants from the pool of vacant ones available that season. The order of selection is determined by lottery at the Season Launch Meeting at the end of March.

Good Food Organizations

Alex House is a proud member of Good Food Organizations (GFO), an initiative of  Community Food Centres Canada. We prioritize healthy, local, and organic food options as an integral component of our programs; and we strive to be active advocates for food security and the protection of green spaces.

As a member of GFO, we partner with community food security organizations striving to offer healthy and dignified food programs in their communities. By working together with a set of shared principles, the program connects like-minded organizations around the country in a collective commitment to achieving a healthy and fair food system.

At Alex House, we have committed ourselves to these principles through the development of a Healthy Food Policy and Practices.

Did You Know - Territorial Acknowledgments are also about honouring the land, and the Indigenous Ancestors who stewarded the land for generations.

I’ve been considering the phrase “all my relations” for some time now. It’s hugely important. It’s our saving grace in the end. It points to the truth that we are all related, that we are all connected, that we all belong to each other. The most important word is “all.” Not just those who look like me, sing like me, dance like me, speak like me, pray like me or behave like me. ALL my relations. That means every person, just as it means every rock, mineral, blade of grass, and creature. We live because everything else does.
