One-to-one Family Support

We work with parents and caregivers to help them reach their family’s individual and collective goals.

Family workers provide parent education, information, support and strategies to increase understanding of child & adolescent development, promote effective communication, address challenging behaviours and increase cooperation. Family workers can also help to create connections to available community resources and additional supports.

Parents and caregivers are also invited to participate in Alex House’s
4-week Positively Parenting series offered throughout the year. See below for more information.

One-to-one Family Support is a free, confidential service for parents and caregivers with children and youth ages 0-13, and funded by the Ministry of Children and Family Development.

Self-referrals and community referrals are welcome. Hours of service are flexible and include evenings.

Creating Connections is an eight-week-long social skills group for youth ages 10-12. This program supports youth in developing skills such as problem-solving, conflict resolution, understanding feelings & emotions, communication, healthy relationships, boundaries and self-esteem.

Creating Connections runs weekly on Thursdays. A registration form is required to participate and must be completed by a caregiver or guardian (this can be done at the first group the youth attends or we can forward it to the caregivers prior).

United Way British Columbia School’s Out Club

This program operates out of Katzie and Latimer Road Elementary schools. This afterschool program is geared to children attending these schools who would benefit from additional community support addressing mental health, social skills and building capacity for leadership.

Through the UW School’s Out Club, participants have the opportunity to participate in a free after-school hours program that helps them build relationships with their peers, youth mentors and program facilitators. As a result, students build their capacity to better cope at school, at home and in their community.

Our program, while meeting the emergent needs of the participants, also supports them to build their capacity to manage their own needs and those of their peers in healthier ways. Ultimately, our intent is to support the participants as they transition to high school and adulthood—equipped with the skills and tools that will help them navigate through life.
